Always Be Prepared

“Always have a backup plan”, my mom would say. Ironically, she wasn’t aware of my experience with an emergency contraceptive in high school. It was a Thursday afternoon, after I’d completed all my classes, I had 2 hours until Volleyball practice. Therefore, I came up with the idea of hanging out with my then-boyfriend until it was time to head to the gym. He lived a few blocks away and I thought I was just going to hang out, eat snacks, and be us. Fast forward 1 hour later, I’m in my advisor’s office freaking out. Although it lasted all but 2 minutes, I was having an anxiety attack. All I could hear was my mom’s voice in my head and trust me, it wasn’t pleasant. After about 45 minutes of counseling, my advisor (let’s call him Nick for the sake of privacy) took me to the school clinic, and right there, the nurse gave me a prescription for an emergency contraceptive. At that time, you needed to be at least 17 years old with a prescription to be able to receive them and I made my way to the pharmacy immediately after volleyball practice. Needless to say, the next two weeks I was an emotional wreck because I didn’t want to bring a child into this world so young. But here I am, 14 years later and I’m living my best life.

There’s this myth attached to emergency contraceptives that it’s an abortion pill or only used by promiscuous individuals as a way to make women feel ashamed about themselves and make decisions that affect them physically & emotionally. That’s why brands like Vagisil® exist. They have been shameless about vaginal health for almost 40 years and they find ways to help women with solutions for their intimate & sexual health issues. I trust them not only because they are shameless about sexual health issues aka VAGINAL HEALTH issues, they are a brand by women for women. So when I found out about Preventeza™ by Vagisil®, I was excited to share.

Preventeza™ is a one-dose emergency contraceptive that helps stop pregnancy before it starts. Although it has the same ingredients as most birth control pills, it’s just at a higher dosage.

A lot of women, including my younger self, appreciate brands that cater to our health issues. Being able to have this on hand, makes one feel prepared and never have to panic after having, what I consider, a lapse in judgment or if primary birth control fails. What society neglects to share with younger women is that 1-in-2 of us may need it at some point in our lives and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Not to mention, you don’t need a prescription. You can just walk into a pharmacy on a whim for a quick pick-up.

I am thankful for the advisor who came to my aid shared proper information with me and helped me with alternative options that didn’t cause me to question my womanhood for not wanting to be pregnant at that time. Being #PreparedIsPowerful I am happy that this generation of women are prepared.

If you are thinking of an emergency contraceptive, take a moment and consider Preventeza. Not to mention, they have a Buy One, Get One, or Give One Free. It doesn’t hurt to be prepared nor to help your friends prepare as well.
