Words of Affirmation

“Thank you for being you and never letting me down. I appreciate everything you include me in, help me with, and the time you share with me. You are a phenomenal woman and I’m glad you're in my life. I love you. "

At first, I cringed a bit. I suck at receiving kind words even though I love to hear them. Alright, so let's have a #CupOfHonestTea . Affirming words are to me what water is to a plant. Not every plant needs a whole lot of water in order to thrive. I don't need a lot of it, but it’s great to have it just in case. I've been in a season of gratitude this whole year and my friends have been able to keep my love cup so filled that even on off days, I can scroll back to conversations to re-read messages and feel better.

Then this past Saturday, I woke up with a sense of self. This sense of purpose. The sense of knowing/understanding who TF I am and what I am not. With this empowering feeling, I started to really dig deep and ask myself one question: QUALITY vs QUANTITY. For years, I’ve been connected to folks, sometimes, simply because we’ve been college buddies. But I haven’t grown, learned, or experienced anything that felt life-changing…like they brought quality to my life. Rather, I realized I was more of the giver and they were the receiver. Deposits were far and few in between, and at their disposal. Honestly, it wasn’t until this last retrograde I realized how much of myself I give and that sometimes it’s to my own detriment.

With that said, as we enter this heavy-ass week, and what will be a life-changing next 4 years (regardless of which candidate wins bc well…they’re both white men but that’s a different topic for another day)… I hope you surround yourself with the love and care you deserve… not just on weekends, birthdays, or special days. But every moment of every day.

My dad always said you can tell a man by the company he keeps and I’m indebted to my close friends for always pouring into me at the most random yet perfect moments. I’m glad to keep you company.
